Phone-friendly full-res gallery downloads
Direct answer
Clients do not want a ZIP. They want the photo in Camera Roll. On iPhone, the usual gallery path is still: tap Download, wait for a new window, long-press, Save Image. Pixieset documents that in its mobile download help. Pic-Time's client help is long-press for one photo and a ZIP into Files for a bulk save. ShootProof is in that same long-press world. A Drive folder is worse. Paid galleries usually look better, then leave the phone problem.
Grain Issue is a photography client portal for book → proof → deliver. In both client and shared galleries, one tip explains the split: on a phone, tap Save on an individual photo; on a computer, use Download all. On supported phones Save opens the OS share sheet. If the share sheet is unavailable, the full-resolution image opens inline so the client can long-press Save Image. Flat $15–79/mo.

| Pixieset | Pic-Time | ShootProof | Grain Issue | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone, one photo | New window, then long-press (their help) | Tap and hold, Add to Photos (their help) | Typically the same long-press path | Save opens the share sheet when supported; inline full-res fallback otherwise |
| Full gallery | ZIP | ZIP into Files, then extract | ZIP | ZIP, with a phone tip to save one photo instead |
| Extra gates | PIN + email on by default | Token can break inside Facebook/IG in-app browsers | Login / permission models vary | Public link, no client password |
| Tradeoff | Labs and ecosystem | Sales automations | Business-tool depth | WHCC-backed print shop depends on studio rollout/configuration; large ZIPs stay a computer job |

What to tell clients
- Phone: tap Save on a photo. Choose Save Image in the share sheet; if the image opens instead, long-press it and choose Save Image. That is the full-res file, not the grid thumbnail.
- Laptop: Download all if they want the whole set at once.
- Do not screenshot the gallery, and do not save from WhatsApp or a Drive preview. Those are the "your photos are blurry" tickets.
- Open the link in Safari or Chrome, not the Instagram / Facebook in-app browser. ZIP downloads often die there.
- If they only want a handful, favorite first. A favorites ZIP is smaller than a 400-photo archive.
Put the phone vs laptop split in the delivery email. Skip it and you become unpaid iOS support. r/WeddingPhotography has been arguing about ZIP-confused couples since at least 2017.
Test your own gallery
Open the delivered link on an iPhone in Safari. Count taps from the email to a file in Recents. If the path is "new tab, then long-press," you will keep getting that text from the mother of the bride.
On Grain Issue, Save sits on the grid tile so they do not have to open the lightbox first. If the share sheet cannot run (some in-app browsers, a CORS miss), we open the image URL, which is the old long-press path. That fallback is real.
Full-gallery ZIP still builds on the server. A multi-gigabyte wedding archive is the risky case, so we probe first and toast a failure instead of dumping them on a JSON error page. A family on one Wi-Fi can hit the ZIP rate limit. Per-photo Save, or a favorites ZIP, is what we want them doing on a phone.

FAQ
Why can't my clients unzip wedding photos on their iPhone?
iOS puts ZIPs in Files, not Photos. Unzip, select all, Share, Save Images is a second job most people never finish. Tell them to save individual photos on the phone and unzip on a computer.
Does Pixieset let clients save to Photos in one tap?
No. Pixieset's help says the iPhone download opens a new window, then they long-press to save. Android usually downloads immediately. Their Mobile Gallery App (Add to Home Screen) is the workaround a lot of studios never mention.
Should I just send a Google Drive folder?
Drive is fine for a retoucher. As client delivery it fails on phones: preview thumbnails, vanished download buttons inside the app, expired folders when you hit storage. A branded gallery still needs a Camera Roll path or you swapped one support ticket for another.
Does Grain Issue replace Pixieset if I need lab prints?
Grain Issue includes a WHCC-backed print shop. Availability depends on the studio's rollout and configuration, so confirm it is enabled before planning a migration around print fulfillment. If you need a different lab ecosystem, keep the platform that supports that lab. Commission math: gallery print commission comparison.
What resolution do they get when they Save on a phone?
The Save action requests the full-res file, not the small grid tile. Grid tiles are compressed for scrolling. If someone screenshots the lightbox before it finishes loading, they still get a soft image. That is why the email should say Save, not screenshot.
