How to collect card payments as a photographer

Direct answer

How to collect card payments as a photographer: connect a payments account (Stripe is the common path), take deposits at booking, collect balances and invoices by card, and keep settlement in your own Stripe dashboard. Avoid Venmo screenshots and “I’ll invoice later” as your default.

Grain Issue uses Stripe Connect so client card payments go to your account. Grain Issue does not take a platform cut of those deposit and invoice payments. You still pay Stripe’s processing fees. This is not a bank underwriting or merchant-cash-advance guide.

Setup checklist

  1. Create or connect Stripe (or your processor) under your legal business name.
  2. Turn on deposits at booking so holds are paid holds. See online booking setup.
  3. Send card invoices for remaining balances after the shoot.
  4. Reconcile payouts in Stripe, not in a spreadsheet of Venmo names.
  5. Keep refund and chargeback policies written in your contract.

What “no platform cut” means

ChargeWho takes a cut
Deposit / invoice via Stripe Connect on Grain IssueStripe processing fees only; Grain Issue takes 0% of that payment
Gallery free-tier store commissions elsewhereOften a percentage of product sales
Grain Issue subscriptionFlat $15 / $29 / $49 / $79 a month ($12 to $64 billed annually)

Honest limits

  • You still need a valid business / tax setup for Stripe
  • Print lab checkout is a different problem than deposits
  • Deep multi-stage CRM billing may still belong in HoneyBook or ShootProof

FAQ

Can clients pay without a password?

Yes on Grain Issue: magic-link access, then card checkout for deposits and invoices.

Is Venmo fine for small sessions?

It works until it does not (no receipts, no automation, messy books). Card checkout scales cleaner.

Where do I see pricing?
